Introduction

Update June 2015: Thank you for all the love this blog has received! I wrote this right after my scholarship ended in 2011 with the intention of providing my perspective on this scholarship and I hope that it has benefited many. While I would love to answer all the questions posted on this blog, I am unfortunately too busy and very likely too outdated to provide good answers. Therefore I have added a forum component to this blog to provide a common space for questions and a space for many contributors to answer. Please use it wisely and courteously. :) Good luck to all who are applying!
---

I was awarded the 6-year ASEAN scholarship for the AY2006 intake. If you bothered doing the math, yes, as of 2011, I have just finished my scholarship tenure and am now in the lull of non-schooling, waiting to see which wave of life I will be catching next.

I create this blog with the hopes of sharing my experience as an ASEAN scholar mainly to parents and students who are thinking of applying for or accepting (in which case, congratulations!) this scholarship. But really, anyone and everyone is welcomed to the contents of this little domain parked in the corner of Bloggerland in Internetverse. The lack of blogs offering similar information about the scholarship despite its popularity have also spurred me on to write.

But please, do be forewarned that it has been six years since I took this step in life. I will not be held responsible for any wrong or outdated information that I may have deviously planted to weed out those who don't know Google. (Kidding! I'll try my best to give correct information. But of course, it is still your responsibility to check and double check your facts.)

Also, I am Malaysian. Much of what I write will be in reference to Malaysia. Terms and conditions of the scholarship as well as my experience may differ from country to country.

I have neatly arranged the topics I will be covering in cute little links you can click below. You can always return back to this post by clicking the "Introduction" label on the top right of the page. Have fun browsing!

Do drop a comment or two if you have any questions that have not been addressed in this blog. I will try my best to respond. Also, if you found this blog useful, pass it on to your friends! Share it on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, your dinner table, whatever. This world will be happier with a little sharing and caring!

  1. Hi. I was offered the sec3 scholarship but I declined it. They posted me to nanyang girls' boarding school as my hostel. What school would I have got? Thanks

  2. Anonymous: I did link a useful ReCom wiki page in the "living in singapore" page that already had a very helpful list matching schools to hostel. Please do read carefully before posing a question next time.

Just to answer your question: Your schools could have been Methodist Girls' School, Nanyang Girls' School or Cresent Girls' School. From my knowledge, while Raffles' Girls scholars stay at NYGBS, there are no/very very few Malaysians that get posted there via ASEAN

  7. I'm a bit confused here. If I am 15 in 2013 and hope to study in Singapore in 2014(After my PMR), I should apply for ASEAN Scholarship 2013 or 2014?

    1. I believe you will apply for ASEAN scholarship 2013. Basically, you apply the year before you intend to study there.

    2. Based on the MOE website, applications for the 2013 ASEAN Scholarships are now closed. So that means I am not able to apply anymore? And that also means that to get the scholarship you have to apply for it two years before the year you want to study in Singapore?

    3. oops my bad then, sorry.

So, in your case, you're in form 3 next year. You will apply for the ASEAN scholarship 2014. The application for the ASEAN scholarship 2014 will be made available around April-May of 2013. (Check MOE website for confirmed dates of application)

  10. Hi Klarissa,

Have you heard of school-based scholarships? How does one find them because I never come across any advertisements, etc. Thanks.

    1. Hi, yes I have heard of them. You will have to contact the school of interest directly to request for forms. Some schools only open up their school based scholarships to certain affiliated schools of their choice in Malaysia. (I have no list of those schools.)

    2. Hi Anonymous,
I have some I-think-useful answers for you.
For what I know, Singapore Hokkien Association offers scholarship to Form Three Students for Sec3 & 4 studies in Nan Chiau High School. It is not well known, but still, competitive. But for now, I think the applications is not yet open. You can google it later.
Im from Penang, so yes, MGS Singapore does offer their school-based scholarship to some selected schools in Penang, such as penang chinese girls and convent green lane.
      Hope this helps!

  11. Hi Klarissa,
I am intending to apply for the sec 3 scholarship . Is it tough? Do i have to cover up form 4 and 5 maths as well? I haven't been able to buy singaporean books here in Malaysia. And am very scared. How many word in an essay as well. Thank you for your time, and sorry for bothering. Thanks :)

    1. Hi, I don't know what Form 3 Math covers, so I recommend you to visit the MOE Singapore website to obtain their Sec2/3 Math O Level syllabus. Learn up topics that you have not learnt in school and you should be quite prepared. I can't remember the word limit of the essay, unfortunately.

That is a question that only you can answer for yourself. What is the primary language of your lessons in school? I can't answer that for you.

  14. Hi Klarissa,
I am fourteen this year and heading on to form 4 next year in my school. I am currently aiming for this scholarship but I've heard that the intake for next year is closed. Therefore, I have to wait for another year when I am having my IGCSE exam to take the PRE - U test. Can I know approximately when will they start to look for intake students? Maybe around April? If so, when will the timetable of the application process will the posted on their Web page?
    Thanks.

  17. Hi Klarissa,
I have always wanted to apply for the ASEAN scholarship, I am now seventeen and preparing for SPM, can you share your experiences on the interview and the selection tests especially Math? This is because I would like to find out more about the degree of difficulty of the tests and prepare myself better.

  19. Hello everyone! Good luck to all who are applying this year!! I noticed that there has been a lot of traffic and need for a good place for conversation between applicants and present/past scholars. So I have created a forum tab which you can find on the top and side of any page in this blog. :) I hope you will have more conversation there and I will try to answer as many as I can as well! :D - Klarissa
